<image:caption>The windows came from a farm property that belonged to my late grandfather and grandmother. I hand etch and ink each window capturing places from my childhood home in rural Ohio, America that hold childhood memories. But, change is good and change is inevitable. One of the most rewarding elements of being an artist is how the art marking process itself can reveal the real meaning. Early in the project, I decided that capturing how these places are changing since my childhood memories is a relevant facet of these subjects.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Sustainable Living - Living in the Present</image:title>
<image:caption>For window no.6, I wanted to capture what was left of our former family orchard. I have fond memories of climbing the trees to pick sour pie cherries for customers and plucking some to snack on. In the late summer we ate and canned everything from apple sauce to peaches and pears. I even remember the chore of mowing the grass around all those trees which could be a bit of an awkward task. The five trees that remain, from what was a sizable orchard, were sold with the family home. But my old neighbor Bob is still there so I paid him a visit.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Sustainable Living - Living in the Present</image:title>
<image:caption>While sketching ‘Three Apple Trees’ – window no.6, I chatted with Bob about this and that including his late wife Betty, who taught me to sew. Everything is connected. Besides being an artist, I teach and practice yoga and I am practicing being present. Listening to Bob talk, feeling the cool grass under my feet, and learning to really look at the changing light and details of three apple trees was a beautiful moment of just being present amidst all the transitions and change.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sustainable Living - Jewelry Lingo Part I: Three Categories of Jewelry - The Artisans of Fashion Jewelry</image:title>
<image:caption>Some of those craft stalls and online shops are true artisans selling fashion jewelry with attention to detail, efforts for longevity, or upcycling discarded items to give them a second life. For many years I upcycled silverplated silverware. Even with the silver ear wires and posts, these would be considered fashion jewelry. These days, I occasionally make small repairs, when possible, to my jewelry clients' fashion jewelry. Though repairs to low-quality materials can be tricky, if I can prevent something from immediately joining a landfill or causing a trash burn, I want to help.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sustainable Living - Jewelry Lingo Part I: Three Categories of Jewelry - Fine Jewelry</image:title>
<image:caption>Words that come to mind when we hear ‘fine jewelry’ include investment, heirloom pieces, engagement, and special occasion. This category of jewelry is defined mainly by its precious metals, including silver, gold, platinum, and palladium. Besides the precious metals, customers come to expect gemstones to be genuine even if they are lab-grown, heat-treated, or semi-precious. With quality materials, even if ownership or styles change, the material can be used again and again.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sustainable Living - Jewelry Lingo Part I: Three Categories of Jewelry - The Artisans of Fine Jewerly</image:title>
<image:caption>Besides the big brand jewelry companies, there are many artisans and small businesses working in fine jewelry. I do not make a lot of fine jewelry pieces, but when I do, I try to mostly use recycled metal, and I am consistently looking for ways to increase the percentage that is recycled. For my stones, I use second-hand stones or buy from small businesses doing the mining themselves or working directly with the miners to confirm the stones are conflict-free.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sustainable Living - Jewelry Lingo Part I: Three Categories of Jewelry - Bridge Jewelry</image:title>
<image:caption>Some jewelry designs have a little more metal craftmanship compared to fashion jewelry. However, these same designs may utilize base metals like copper and brass, which are easily identified but quickly patina and are more likely to react with some people’s skin. Instead of pure gold, gold plating and gold-filled elements cut costs, especially when gold is 100x the price of silver.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sustainable Living - Jewelry Lingo Part I: Three Categories of Jewelry - Artisans of Bridge Jewelry</image:title>
<image:caption>When I came across the term ‘bridge jewelry,’ I was happy to learn that there is a way to categorize the majority of my current jewelry designs. I have a variety of designs that I individually hand-craft, utilizing techniques that let me turn out a beautiful piece faster than my fine jewelry pieces. For pieces where I want gold-luster, I use gold plating or a technique called keum-boo. I accompany these with gold-filled chains and ear wires. This allows me to provide quality jewelry pieces at an attainable price for more clients. As a bonus, if a customer ever loses an earring, I can always remake one.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sustainable Living - Earth Day- Windows - The Window Series - Window #1</image:title>
<image:caption>I started this series in 2014 after returning from Myanmar, our first home outside America. It took me a while to decide how to utilize the windows into an art series. I came across a mini tutorial using a rotary tool with a diamond flecked bit instead of toxic etching creams. I had an idea to combine in with intaglio ink, I made a sample on a glass bottle and it worked! This is where my inked freehand glass etching began. The idea with the windows was to do something reconnecting with my roots. Most of the artwork I have made since 2011 is inspired by the countries we live in. Window #1 I juxtaposes a rural overgrown silo from the area I grew up and the city architecture viewed out our window during that brief three month stay in Washington DC between living in Myanmar and Armenia.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sustainable Living - Earth Day- Windows - “The Road Home” window #2</image:title>
<image:caption>These windows came from my late grandfather’s barn and each time I return for a visit, I etch one more window. The drive from the highway out to my childhood had filled me with nostalgia and became the subject for window #2. It was a route I knew well growing up. “Home” is a tricky word for me these day. Though this area and my family have a special place in my heart, the places we live, like here in Tokyo, are home. “Home” changes and expands with time.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sustainable Living - Earth Day- Windows - “Earth Day View” -window #3</image:title>
<image:caption>The old farmhouse view from the Earth Day pine trees was the subject for window #3. This house went back generations. It is where my grandfather grew up, and my mother spent her early childhood. As a child I was fascinated by the history it held. After going through old photos with my grandmother I decided I wanted to capture it as it was in that moment of 2018. I asked my parents to hold this window for me as I took a photo through the window of the same view.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sustainable Living - Earth Day- Windows - “Langenderfer Farms” -window #4</image:title>
<image:caption>For Window #4 I chose the view across the field from my grandmother’s lawn. As I was sketching my grandmother told me that the farm in the distance was the original Langenderfer Farm. She also said the family brought the bricks all the way from Germany to build it. My parents moved this window with my grandmother when she had to spend her last few months in an assisted living. It meant a lot to me that she got to keep her view across the field.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sustainable Living - Earth Day- Windows - "The Willow Tree" -window #5</image:title>
<image:caption>I captured my favorite childhood meeting spot for window #5. The catholic church was about halfway between my home and my best friend. Along side the church, is a graveyard full of the previous generations including many of my ancestors. This same parish is where my parents were married, I was baptized as a baby, and my grandparents now rest. But it was the willow tree at the back of the graveyard that we loved best. We would try to translate the old German gravestones, swing on the willow branches, and set up a little picnic.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Sustainable Living - Earth Day- Windows - Another 10-15 Years</image:title>
<image:caption>This is a rather personal art project and I love layering my memories with how the area has changed. This is what I want to capture in windows that could have become more waste in a landfill but I happened to take a interest in all those years ago. My brother mentioned them and went with me to pull them out before the structures were torn down and the property sold. I have a few more windows to etch. It will take about 20 years start to finish to complete this series. You can see a brief video of my working on window #5 on my Instagram</image:caption>

<image:title>Sustainable Living - Living and Loss - Even something like death is surrounded with choices.</image:title>
<image:caption>This month we lost both of our dogs just two weeks apart. They had long and full lives but we only had days to come to terms with the first loss and anyone who has had a pet will understand how much sorrow there is in saying goodbye. So, this is partially a goodbye to our sweet dogs and a reflection on sustainable living and dying as humans and animals.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Sustainable Living - Living and Loss - Remains</image:title>
<image:caption>We had our dogs cremated at a temple here in Tokyo. Though cremation is not without its pollution, when there is so little land available, especially in a dense urban environment, cremation makes the most sense. In a couple of months we will let their ashes return to the earth. Here in Japan dealing with remains is separate from the veterinarian or hospital. Luckily my friend recommended Ekō-in (回向院) which has a rich history and they are so respectful to every living thing. As part of our own closure we burned incense and requested wood “sotoba” (卒塔婆) which will remain at the temple until these too are burned. For myself, anyone who is close to me knows that I would prefer human composting for my own remains when the time comes.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Sustainable Living - Living and Loss - Possessions</image:title>
<image:caption>The apartment feels empty without the dogs but it is important to us to ensure nothing goes to waste. I am checking with local dog rescues to pass on food, supplements, their kennels, etc. Luckily our dogs had few possessions and someone should be able to use what they no longer need. Again, reflecting on my own life and and losses, in a day and age with so much surplus, possessions can become a burden to those we leave behind. I will not pretend to be a minimalist. I love my art and beautiful functional items which make me happy. However, I avoid impulsive purchases and prioritize secondhand whenever possible. It is also important for me to avoid things that have limited use and add to the plastic waste.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sustainable Living - Art prints keeping sustainability in mind - The art supplies:</image:title>
<image:caption>For the original art, I used sumi, a soot-based ink stick. I ground the ink with water on an ink stone to produce a liquid ink as I need it. I did the same with a red ink stick for the red highlights. I used brushes made of bamboo and natural bristles, and I worked on paper made of fast-growing bamboo and recycled fibers. In two of the ink paintings I also used refillable Copic pens with aluminum exteriors.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sustainable Living - Art prints keeping sustainability in mind - The company:</image:title>
<image:caption>I worked with Print Tokyo, a local small business. By working with a local company I could reduce the carbon footprint produced by importing from a cheaper company while also supporting a fellow small business.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sustainable Living - Art prints keeping sustainability in mind - The paper:</image:title>
<image:caption>Print Tokyo had a variety of papers to choose from including two types of bamboo paper, one from Awagami Factory. Bamboo is fast-growing and it can be a great alternative to wood pulp paper. I also really like the subtle textures the bamboo paper had.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sustainable Living - Art prints keeping sustainability in mind - The packaging:</image:title>

<image:title>Sustainable Living - Recycled Framing - Sand and Paint Frame</image:title>
<image:caption>I sanded back the varnish and some of the stain. Then I painted the frame with several coats of thin white paint, allowing each to dry before the next coat. Because this is real wood I could have applied a new stain or a subtle color wash. I decided the artwork I was making would look better with a slightly rustic all-over white.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Sustainable Living - Recycled Framing - Replace Glass</image:title>
<image:caption>I ordered a replacement piece of real glass from a local frame shop. In this case I gave them the scuffed up piece of plexi to duplicate the size but usually I just measure it out to place an order. In the U.S. I used to order custom cut glass from the hardware stores. If the frame has real glass, it may just need a good scrubbing.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Sustainable Living - Recycled Framing - Ink Wash Matboard</image:title>
<image:caption>I brushed a sumi ink wash across the old mat board to unify the look with the ink painting. For this one I wanted to try and reuse the mat because the gold trim inspired me to use washi with gold threads for the artwork. In most cases I make a new custom-cut matboard. You can also order custom-cut mat boards at your local framing shop which is significantly more affordable that a full custom frame job.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sustainable Living - Recycled Framing - Cut backboard and Seal</image:title>
<image:caption>I cut a new backboard to replace the molded one. I sealed the back of the framed art with brown paper tape and craft paper to prevent dust from getting into the art. Lastly, I attached a heavy-duty hanging wire to the hardware, that was still good. In most circumstances, I have to attach new hardware for the hanging wire. In these cases, it is important to drill tiny holes for the screws to go into. This ensures the frame does not split.</image:caption>

I cut and ironed the plastic droplets from plastic waste I saved over the last year and a half. <image:caption>In the end most of the plastic had to be set out with the rubbish. Some would be recycled but even this process has waste. I learned a lot about the seven types of plastic and became more aware of how much plastic waste we still go through. This is both a seller and consumer problem. We have managed to make a few more changes to our lifestyle but it is a process. I would encourage readers to track their own plastic waste and consider how it can be limited step by step.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Sustainable Living - Breathe In</image:title>
<image:caption>There are times when we realize we cannot do everything. In these moments it is important to prioritize, realistically set new deadlines, and do the work. However, in the midst of this, it is equally important to take a moment to breathe in.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Sustainable Living - Breathe In - Take in Nature</image:title>
<image:caption>The day after I passed my exam we slept in then took a day trip out to Chureito Pagoda for that epic view of the cherry blossoms with Mount Fuji and the five-tiered pagoda. The cherry blossoms are so fleeting and it is a good reminder to take in the moment with the manicured and unwieldy nature.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sustainable Living - Breathe In - Focus on being present</image:title>
<image:caption>This is something I have been working on in my yoga practice, furthering education, business tasks, and studio time. When I block areas of time, remove distractions, and refocus my thoughts on the present task I do my best work. I am trying to take some time every day to stretch, sketch, and practice my Japanese. When I start thinking about other obligations, I remind myself to return to what is in front of me because that task will be there and I need to bring the same presence of mind to that task when I move to it.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I love the clean and practical design of this dish drying rack. It has two levels and folds up when it is not being used. With the switch to bar dish soap, I have become fond of a dish brush that is also easy to sterilize. And of course, we have bamboo storage container lids for tidying beans and such.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Sustainable Living - Bamboo - Self care</image:title>
<image:caption>The soap slides around on this one a bit more than the last bamboo soap dish but I do like that the water easily drains off. I am fond of a good nail brush, especially as an artist and a dry exfoliating brush is great for that dry skin. Though we use an electric toothbrush day to day, we have bamboo toothbrushes for travel and I recently saw an electric toothbrush design that has bamboo replaceable heads. We also found a bamboo toilet paper which is not bad.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The very process of getting permission and winning over communities was part of the art as much as the finished project. In the case of L'Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped, it was 60 years from conception to realization. Christo and Jeanne Claude also created jobs for manufacturing, installation, and monitors on site to direct visitors and answer questions.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sustainable Living - What becomes of our creations - Independently Funded</image:title>
<image:caption>Christo would create drawings, and collage paintings which were a concept for the final project, yet to be realized. The sale of these pieces of art funded the eventual installation. Ensuring the art belonged to no individual or company was a value they held dear.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sustainable Living - What becomes of our creations - The Work Was Fleeting</image:title>
<image:caption>The very temporary nature could make it difficult to experience a Christo and Jeanne Claude, but like life, the fleeting nature of it, is part of what makes it so beautiful. All their designs went up in such a way that the environment, natural or man made, could be returned to the undisturbed previous state. The only compromise was the removal of tons of litter when they created Surrounded Islands.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sustainable Living - What becomes of our creations - A Plan for the Materials</image:title>
<image:caption>While planning, Christo and Jeanne Claude considered the production and final destination of their material. When the project does comes to an end, the materials are recycled. From L'Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped, the aluminum will be stripped off and turned into cans, and the poly fabric will be turned to sneakers.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Like many people, this image of a triangle made of three arrows is ingrained in my head from childhood. But, though it represents three R’s: reduce, reuse, and recycle, somehow we forget the first two. We see it all over packaging but deceptively these may not be recyclable or there is still waste generated in the recycling process. So lets look at the fist two R’s before going straight to recycle.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Shinzen Natura creates small batches of handmade products like bar soaps including Bugsy Suds, dog shampoo. I bought a bar of Bugs Suds and it is a far better product than any bottle shampoo I have used! Not only is it 100% plastic free packaging, it was gentle on my my Italian Greyhounds’ dry sensitive skin. The dogs are so soft and smell great. It even has neem oil, a natural and safe insect repellent. For myself, I look forward to trying her spiced coffee soap, which combines brewed coffee for a natural exfoliant, and essential oils of orange, clove, ginger, lemon and cinnamon cassia for a spicy scent I love.</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Artist</image:title>
<image:caption>In MYANMAR, I worked on larger-than-life oil paintings full of symbolism and intimate ink drawings done in the moment, capturing the rapid changes of the country. During our two years, I had two solo exhibitions with Nawaday Tharlar Gallery and Pansodan Gallery. Much of my energy went into implementing Hla Day, a fair-trade market concept, alongside a team of international women. I was a design consultant and did a myriad of tasks to see what started as three local groups grow to over 30 in two years.</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Artist</image:title>
<image:caption>In ARMENIA, I expanded into small installations made from upcycled material, including reclaimed glass windows and bottles and cardboard constructed into blocks. In addition to my solo exhibitions with Dalan Art Gallery and The Green Bean, I was honored to show alongside some of Armenia’s finest contemporary artists including two HAYP Pop Up Gallery exhibitions. My early jewelry consisted of miniature paintings under glass cabochons and paired with recycled fibers. Within the last weeks of living in Armenia, I found someone to teach me the basics of turning reclaimed metal into jewelry.</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Artist</image:title>
<image:caption>In ZIMBABWE, I continued with upcycled materials, expanding the reclaimed metal jewelry, and diversified to work on handmade paper from Zimbabwean paper artists. I created 400+ pieces of jewelry, 30+ etched bottles, and 70+ portraits on handmade paper. Most of these portraits were women from the rural areas who benefited from livelihood programs. I participated in and occasionally curated 15 exhibitions, including solo and group exhibitions. One of my group exhibitions included the National Gallery of Zimbabwe’s Balance 4 Better. Among the collections my art belongs to, three of my portraits were purchased for the permanent collection of Art in Embassies’ U.S. Embassy Harare.</image:caption>

<image:caption>When we moved to Tokyo, a metropolis full of skyscrapers and intense energy, I was drawn to the small elements that make up the city's fabric. Small Architecture Between Skyscrapers captures some of these lesser-celebrated structures while prioritizing sustainable and recycled materials. In addition to these series, jewelry and a selection of other art pieces will also be available for viewing and purchase. Want to come and need details? Contact me :)</image:caption>
